Students are often overlooked in public schools. The above average students are bored and uninterested, the below average students are unmotivated since they are struggling to keep up with their peers, while the few average students are receiving education that suits their needs. This situation is not providing every student with the quality education they deserve. Students are being left behind or streamed into a program that will not allow them to attend post-secondary education. The public school classroom has approximately 40 students per kindergarten class and approximately 22 students per classroom for grades 1-12. Because of these large class sizes, teachers have difficulty ensuring that each student receives education that is relevant and applicable to them.
Riverdale offers students alternative learning methods, providing students with a curriculum that suits their individual learning style and incorporates their interests into lessons. The individualized curriculum will be developed with consultation of the student and the parents. Developing the plan with parents and students will help ensure that parents have a say in what their child is learning and students have a voice in what and how they desire to learn. Catering to students’ individual needs and preferences will help to increase student engagement and motivation.
